Collaging Consciousness: Art as a Method to Encounter Heterogeneity and Ecological Consciousness,” with Melinda Kiefer

Talk description: Artist/Educator Melinda Kiefer discusses her studio practice which incorporates painting, sculpture, and collage of natural and recycled materials to challenge dominant cultural systems and offer radical possibilities of alternate consciousnesses such as ecological consciousness through art. By working with a variety of materials, Kiefer explores how experience is rooted in materiality rather than ideologically separated, an illusion which has been intensified by daily mediated experience. Kiefer also touches upon her practice as an arts educator to disband colonial systems of knowledge dominating the body and the imagination.
