CALL FOR PAPERS
“NEUROANTHROPOLOGY OF STRANGENESS”
SOCIETY FOR THE ANTHROPOLOGY OF CONSCIOUSNESS
114TH AAA ANNUAL MEETING
DENVER, CO: NOVEMBER 18-22, 2015
The Society for the Anthropology of Consciousness welcomes paper and
panel proposals for the American Anthropological Association meeting, 2015 in
Denver Colorado. Casting common sense in new light by making the familiar seem
strange and the strange seem familiar is a venerable strategy used across
anthropology’s subfields. This year, SAC invites participants to explore, in
particular, familiarity and strangeness in the context of neuroanthropology, which
emphasizes variation, brain plasticity, processes, and context. Topics related to
consciousness may include the following, although others topics are welcome:
- Neuroanthropology of familiarity and strangeness
- Liminality and in-betweeness
- Ethnography of strangeness, “others”, or “othering”
- Indigenous ways of knowing
- Art and creative processes
- Meditation and yoga
- Ethnic, national, and political consciousness
- Ethneogens and psychoactive substances
PROPOSALS DUE APRIL 15, 2015
